Vestigialia is a term sometimes used to refer to vestigial organs or structures. These are anatomical features that have become reduced in size and function over time, often because they are no longer essential for an organism's survival. Vestigial structures are evidence of evolution, as they suggest that an organism has inherited traits from an ancestor that were once useful but have since lost their primary purpose.

Examples of vestigial organs in humans include the appendix, which is thought to have once played a role in digesting cellulose in our herbivorous ancestors, and the coccyx, or tailbone, which is a remnant of a tail. Other examples include the wisdom teeth, which may have been more important for grinding tough foods in ancestral diets, and the muscles that allow us to wiggle our ears, which are well-developed in many other mammals for communication or sensing prey.

In other species, vestigial structures can be even more striking. For instance, some snakes have tiny, non-functional hind leg bones, and certain whales possess vestigial pelvic bones. The presence of these structures, even though they serve no apparent function in the modern organism, provides a clear link to their evolutionary past. Studying vestigialia helps scientists understand evolutionary relationships between different species and the processes by which organisms adapt and change over vast periods.
