Vestibularhäire refers to a range of conditions affecting the vestibular system, which is responsible for maintaining balance and spatial orientation. This system is located in the inner ear and includes the semicircular canals and the otolith organs. When the vestibular system is not functioning correctly, individuals may experience symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo (a sensation of spinning), unsteadiness, and nausea.

Common causes of vestibularhäire include benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Meniere's disease, vestibular neuritis, and labyrinthitis. BPPV is often triggered by changes in head position and is caused by dislodged calcium carbonate crystals in the inner ear. Meniere's disease is a chronic condition characterized by episodes of vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), and a feeling of fullness in the ear. Vestibular neuritis and labyrinthitis are inflammatory conditions that can result from viral infections, affecting the vestibular nerve or the entire labyrinth, respectively.

Diagnosis of vestibularhäire typically involves a medical history, a physical examination, and specific vestibular function tests. These tests may assess eye movements, balance, and the response of the vestibular system to different stimuli. Treatment approaches vary depending on the specific condition and can include medication, vestibular rehabilitation therapy (exercises to retrain the brain to compensate for vestibular dysfunction), and surgical options in some cases. While some vestibularhäire can be resolved, others may be chronic, requiring ongoing management to control symptoms and improve quality of life.
