A vesiyhteisö, which translates to "water community" or "aquatic community," refers to the interconnected group of living organisms that inhabit a particular aquatic environment, along with their physical surroundings. This encompasses all the biotic components, such as plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms, and their abiotic components, which include water itself, sunlight, temperature, dissolved nutrients, sediment, and the physical structure of the habitat.

These communities are found in diverse aquatic settings, including oceans, lakes, rivers, ponds, wetlands, and even temporary water bodies like puddles. The specific species present and their interactions are heavily influenced by the characteristics of the water body, such as its salinity, depth, flow rate, and nutrient levels. For example, a coral reef ecosystem in a tropical ocean will have a vastly different vesiyhteisö than a freshwater lake in a temperate region.

Within a vesiyhteisö, organisms play various roles, forming complex food webs and nutrient cycles. Producers, like phytoplankton and aquatic plants, form the base by converting light energy into organic matter. Consumers, ranging from small zooplankton to large fish and marine mammals, feed on other organisms. Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, break down dead organic matter, returning essential nutrients to the water for producers to utilize. The health and stability of a vesiyhteisö depend on the balance of these interactions and the availability of resources. Environmental changes, pollution, or invasive species can disrupt this balance, leading to a decline in biodiversity and overall ecosystem function.
