Vesistöviranomaiset are Finnish authorities responsible for managing and supervising water bodies. The term translates to "water management authorities" or "water authority." These bodies play a crucial role in ensuring the sustainable use and protection of Finland's extensive network of lakes, rivers, and coastal waters. Their responsibilities encompass a wide range of tasks, including water quality monitoring, flood control, pollution prevention, and the regulation of water abstraction and discharges.

The primary vesistöviranomainen in Finland is the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre), which operates under the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. Each ELY Centre has a water management unit that handles regional water issues. These authorities are tasked with implementing national water management policies and legislation. They assess the ecological status of water bodies, issue permits for activities affecting water, and develop action plans to improve water quality where needed.

In addition to ELY Centres, other governmental and municipal bodies may have roles related to water management. For instance, the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) conducts research and provides expertise, while municipalities are responsible for local water supply and wastewater treatment. The overarching goal of the vesistöviranomaiset is to maintain and improve the ecological and chemical status of Finnish waters, ensuring their availability for various uses, including drinking water, recreation, and biodiversity.
