Vesipyörä, meaning water bicycle in Finnish, is a pedal-powered watercraft in which the rider’s pedaling drives a propulsion system. The rider sits on a bicycle-like frame that is supported by a hull or by pontoons, letting the craft move on the surface of a lake, river, or coastal area. Vesipyörät are a form of human-powered transportation and recreation, separate from motorized boats but akin to pedal boats in concept.

Most vesipyörät fall into two main configurations. In propeller-driven designs, pedals turn a crank and a gear train that rotates a submerged propeller, pushing the craft through the water. In paddle-wheel configurations, the pedals rotate a wheel with paddles that displace water to generate forward thrust. Some models use a combination of pedal power with auxiliary motors or sails for assistance, but a pure vesipyörä relies on human power.

Designs vary in hull geometry. Some are built on buoyant pontoons with a central seating pod, while others resemble a low-profile boat with a frame-mounted seating area. Sizes range from single-rider units to twin-seat configurations, allowing shared propulsion or more stable operation for beginners.

Historically, pedal-powered watercraft have appeared in various forms since the 19th century. In Finland, vesipyörä is a term used for contemporary recreational pedal boats as well as traditional pedal-powered craft used on lakes and rivers. They are popular in tourist areas and during warm months, serving as a leisure activity and a gentle introduction to watercraft for inexperienced users.

Safety considerations include wearing a life jacket and following local waterway regulations. Operators should maintain the craft, check the propulsion system for wear, and be aware of weather and water conditions.
