Vesinikkütus, also known as hydrogen fuel, is a chemical fuel that releases energy when it reacts with oxygen, producing water as a byproduct. It can be produced through various methods, including electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources, steam reforming of natural gas, or gasification of biomass. The most environmentally friendly method is the production of "green hydrogen" through electrolysis powered by renewable electricity, as it results in zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Hydrogen can be stored and transported in several ways, including compressed gas, liquefied hydrogen, or by being chemically bonded to other substances like ammonia or methanol. Its primary application is in fuel cells, which convert the chemical energy of hydrogen directly into electricity with high efficiency and zero emissions at the point of use. This makes hydrogen fuel cells a promising technology for powering vehicles, stationary power generation, and portable electronics.

The use of hydrogen as a fuel offers several advantages. It is a clean energy carrier, meaning its combustion or reaction in a fuel cell produces only water vapor. This can significantly reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change mitigation efforts. Hydrogen also has a high energy density by weight, making it suitable for applications where weight is a critical factor, such as in transportation.

However, challenges remain in the widespread adoption of hydrogen fuel. The production of hydrogen can be energy-intensive, and currently, a significant portion of hydrogen is produced from fossil fuels, which negates its environmental benefits. The infrastructure for storing, transporting, and distributing hydrogen is also not yet fully developed, requiring substantial investment. Safety concerns associated with handling a highly flammable gas like hydrogen also need to be addressed through robust regulations and technologies. Research and development continue to focus on improving production efficiency, lowering costs, and enhancing safety measures for hydrogen fuel.
