Vesilentokoneiden, often translated as seaplanes or floatplanes, are aircraft capable of taking off from and landing on water. They are equipped with floats or a boat-like hull instead of traditional wheels. This design allows them to access remote areas or operate from locations where conventional runways are unavailable.

There are two main types of seaplanes: floatplanes and flying boats. Floatplanes are essentially conventional aircraft fitted with large floats beneath the fuselage. These floats provide buoyancy, enabling water operations. Flying boats, on the other hand, have a watertight fuselage designed to act as a hull, with smaller stabilizing floats attached to the wings.

The development of seaplanes began in the early 20th century, driven by the need for aerial reconnaissance and transport in areas with extensive coastlines, lakes, and rivers. During World War I and World War II, seaplanes played significant roles in naval operations, including anti-submarine patrols, search and rescue, and reconnaissance. They were particularly valuable for naval fleets operating far from land bases.

Modern seaplanes are used for a variety of purposes, including passenger transport to islands and remote communities, tourism, cargo delivery, and environmental monitoring. Their ability to operate from water makes them versatile aircraft for specific niche applications. However, they are generally slower and less efficient than comparable land-based aircraft due to the added weight and drag of their water-operating gear. Maintenance of the floats or hull and engine components exposed to water also requires specialized attention.
