Vesihydraatti, also known as a hydrate, is a compound that has a specific number of water molecules associated with its crystal structure. These water molecules, referred to as water of crystallization or water of hydration, are incorporated into the crystal lattice when the substance forms. The number of water molecules per formula unit of the anhydrous compound is indicated by a numerical prefix, such as in copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate, CuSO4·5H2O. The chemical formula clearly shows the ratio of the anhydrous salt to the water molecules.
