Vesienhoitodirektiivit are a set of European Union (EU) regulations aimed at protecting and improving the quality of water bodies across the EU. These directives are part of the EU's Water Framework Directive (WFD), which was adopted in 2000 and entered into force in 2008. The WFD establishes a framework for the protection of inland surface waters, transitional waters, coastal waters, and groundwater. It requires member states to achieve good ecological and chemical status for all water bodies by 2027, with intermediate targets set for 2021 and 2015.
