Verschilfrequentie, also known as beat frequency, is a phenomenon that occurs when two sound waves with slightly different frequencies are combined. The perceived sound then exhibits a periodic variation in loudness. This variation in loudness, or amplitude, is what we refer to as the difference frequency.

The difference frequency is mathematically calculated by subtracting the lower frequency from the higher frequency. For instance, if one sound wave has a frequency of 440 Hz and another has a frequency of 442 Hz, the difference frequency will be 2 Hz. This means that the combined sound will appear to pulse or beat 2 times every second.

This phenomenon is a direct consequence of the principle of superposition. When the two waves meet, their amplitudes add together at each point in time. Because their frequencies are different, the crests and troughs of the waves do not align perfectly and continuously. At times, the crests of both waves align, resulting in a larger amplitude and louder sound. At other times, a crest of one wave might coincide with a trough of the other, leading to cancellation or a much smaller amplitude and softer sound. This constructive and destructive interference pattern, occurring cyclically, creates the audible beats.

Verschilfrequentie has practical applications, most notably in tuning musical instruments. Musicians can use the presence or absence of beats to determine if two notes are in perfect unison. When two notes are slightly out of tune, audible beats will be heard, and by adjusting one of the notes, the beats can be made to slow down and eventually disappear when the notes are in tune. It is also used in some electronic circuits and signal processing applications.
