Verehaigus, also known as measles, is a highly contagious viral disease caused by the measles virus, a member of the genus Morbillivirus within the Paramyxoviridae family. The infection primarily affects children but can occur at any age if immunity has not been developed.

The disease spreads through respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes of infected individuals. The incubation period ranges from 10 to 14 days, during which the infected person is contagious. Common symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. A characteristic Koplik's spot—a small white lesion on the mucous membranes—appears inside the mouth prior to the rash. The hallmark of verehaigus is a widespread skin rash that typically starts on the face and neck before spreading to the rest of the body.

Preventative measures include vaccination with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, which has proven highly effective at reducing incidence worldwide. In regions with high vaccination coverage, outbreaks are uncommon; however, unvaccinated populations remain at risk.

Complications from verehaigus can be severe and include pneumonia, encephalitis, and in some cases, death. The disease can also lead to subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), a rare but fatal neurological disorder that can occur years after infection.

Management of verehaigus primarily involves supportive care, including hydration, fever reduction, and addressing secondary bacterial infections if they arise. Due to the potential severity and contagious nature of the disease, public health efforts emphasize vaccination and early detection to prevent outbreaks and reduce morbidity and mortality associated with verehaigus.
