Verdantius is a fictional genus of evergreen shrubs in the family Verdaceae, described in the world-building materials for the planet Verdantia. It is valued in the setting for its dense, glossy foliage and its role in understory ecosystems.

Etymology and taxonomy: The name Verdantius derives from Latin verdans meaning "green" and the conventional taxonomic suffix -ius. The genus was first described by botanists Aria Solis and Theo Marin in 2145 in Verdantia’s flora index. The genus currently includes several described species, among them Verdantius viridis and Verdantius montanus.

Description: Verdantius species are shrubs or small trees typically 1–4 meters tall. Leaves are evergreen, simple, alternately arranged, 4–12 cm long, elliptic to lanceolate, with a leathery texture and prominent venation. Inflorescences are panicles of small greenish flowers; fruit is a dry capsule that dehisces to release numerous tiny seeds.

Distribution and habitat: Endemic to Verdantia’s cloud forests at elevations around 900–1500 meters, in humid, moss-rich environments with rich organic soils. Occurs in primary and regenerating secondary forests, often on shaded slopes and near streams.

Ecology and conservation: Verdantius forms ectomycorrhizal associations and participates in the understory plant community with ferns and mosses. Seed dispersal is primarily by small frugivorous birds. Some species are used regionally for natural dyes. Habitat loss from logging and agriculture threatens several species; regional protections and forest reserves help maintain populations.
