Ventura is a city in California, serving as the county seat of Ventura County. It lies on the Pacific coast roughly midway between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. The city is at the mouth of the Ventura River and is anchored by Mission San Buenaventura, the historic Spanish mission after which the community is named. Ventura has a Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers.

The area was home to the Chumash people for thousands of years before Spanish colonization and the establishment of the mission in 1782. The mission and nearby settlements grew into a fishing and agricultural town that expanded into a regional commercial center and popular tourist destination in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Ventura covers a bit over 20 square miles of coastal land and hills. The Ventura Harbor, a working marina and waterfront district, is a key economic and recreational asset. The city’s economy relies on tourism, government and healthcare services, education, and light manufacturing, with surrounding agricultural production in the Oxnard–Ventura area, including strawberries and other crops.

Cultural institutions include the Museum of Ventura County and the Rubicon Theatre. The city hosts events such as summer concerts at the harbor and the annual Ventura County Fair. Downtown Ventura preserves historic architecture and a walkable urban core.

Transportation options include the U.S. Route 101 corridor and Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner. Local transit is provided by Gold Coast Transit. The closest major airports are Los Angeles International and Santa Barbara Municipal.
