Venttiötyö, a Finnish term, translates to "valve work" or "valve job" in English. It refers to the process of inspecting, servicing, or replacing the valves in an internal combustion engine. Valves are critical components that control the flow of air-fuel mixture into the combustion chamber and exhaust gases out of it.

The typical venttiötyö procedure involves dismantling the cylinder head from the engine block. Once removed, the valves, springs, retainers, and seals are accessed. The valves themselves are inspected for signs of wear, burning, or damage. The valve seats, which are the surfaces within the cylinder head that the valves seal against, are also examined. Often, lapping or grinding is performed to ensure a tight seal between the valve and its seat. Worn valve guides may be replaced, and new valve stem seals are usually installed to prevent oil from entering the combustion chamber.

This type of engine work is undertaken to address issues such as loss of compression, rough idling, poor performance, or excessive oil consumption. In some cases, venttiötyö might be part of a larger engine overhaul or rebuild.
