Ventilatorrelaterad refers to conditions or complications that arise as a consequence of receiving mechanical ventilation. Mechanical ventilation is a life-support technique used to assist or replace the natural breathing process for patients who are unable to breathe adequately on their own. While essential in many critical care settings, prolonged or improperly managed ventilation can lead to various adverse outcomes.

One common ventilatorrelaterad issue is ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). This is an infection of the lungs that develops in patients who are on mechanical ventilation. It occurs when bacteria or other microorganisms enter the lungs, often facilitated by the presence of the endotracheal tube, which bypasses the body's natural defense mechanisms.

Another concern is ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI). This can result from the pressure and volume of air delivered by the ventilator, potentially causing damage to the delicate lung tissue. Strategies such as lung-protective ventilation, which uses lower tidal volumes and appropriate positive end-expiratory pressure, are employed to minimize the risk of VILI.

Patients on ventilators may also experience difficulties with spontaneous breathing, leading to prolonged weaning processes. This refers to the gradual reduction of ventilator support as the patient's respiratory function improves. Additionally, airway complications such as tracheal stenosis or vocal cord damage can occur due to the presence of the endotracheal tube. Careful patient selection, appropriate ventilator settings, and diligent nursing care are crucial in preventing or mitigating ventilatorrelaterad complications.
