Veekogud are natural or artificial bodies of water that cover and shape the Earth’s surface. In Estonian usage, the term encompasses lakes (järved), rivers and streams (jõed ja ojad), wetlands (sood ja rabad), seas, and other water-containing areas. Veekogud are defined by their hydrological regime, geographic location, and the biotic communities they support, but they are also shaped by water chemistry, temperature, sediment, and light availability.

Types of veekogud vary by salinity, size, and origin. Freshwater veekogud include lakes, rivers, streams, and ponds, which can be natural or man-made such as reservoirs. Brackish or marine veekogud refer to coastal seas, estuaries, and tidal flats. Artificial veekogud are created for purposes such as water supply, flood control, or energy generation. In ecological and environmental planning contexts, veekogud are often studied as integrated systems, with attention to catchment areas, groundwater exchange, and sediment dynamics.

Ecology and services play a central role in understanding veekogud. They provide habitat for a wide range of aquatic and riparian species, support migratory routes, and contribute to nutrient cycling. They also offer ecosystem services including drinking water, irrigation, recreation, flood mitigation, sediment trapping, and, in some cases, hydropower.

Protection and management of veekogud involve monitoring water quality and ecological status, implementing pollution control, and applying integrated water resource management. Human activities, climate change, invasive species, and development pressures pose ongoing challenges to the health and resilience of veekogud.
