Vedetäjäähdytysjärjestelmä, known in English as a water cooling system, is a method of thermal management used in various applications, most commonly in high-performance computers and internal combustion engines. The fundamental principle involves circulating a liquid coolant, typically water or a water-based mixture, through a closed loop to absorb heat from a component and then dissipate that heat elsewhere.

In the context of computers, water cooling replaces traditional air cooling methods such as heatsinks and fans. A water block is attached directly to the heat-generating component, such as the CPU or GPU. This water block contains channels through which the coolant flows, picking up heat. The heated coolant is then pumped to a radiator, which is a finned heat exchanger. Fans are usually attached to the radiator to force air through the fins, accelerating the heat transfer from the coolant to the surrounding air. The cooled liquid then returns to the water block, completing the loop.

For internal combustion engines, a similar principle applies. Coolant circulates through passages in the engine block and cylinder head, absorbing combustion heat. This heated coolant then flows to the radiator, typically located at the front of the vehicle, where airflow dissipates the heat. A thermostat regulates the coolant flow, ensuring the engine operates within its optimal temperature range. Water cooling systems are generally more efficient at heat dissipation than air cooling, allowing for higher performance and quieter operation in computers, and maintaining stable operating temperatures in engines.
