vaxljus

A vaxljus is a candle made from wax with a central wick, designed to burn for light, fragrance, or decoration. The term is Swedish for wax candle, but the object is widely used around the world under various names. Common materials include paraffin, beeswax, soy wax, palm wax, or blends, and candles may be scented or unscented.

Candles come in many forms, such as tapers, votives, tealights, or container candles poured into jars or tins. Production typically involves melting wax, adding color and fragrance if desired, inserting the wick, and letting the mold or container cool until solid. Beeswax candles burn longer and have a natural aroma; paraffin and soy candles are popular for cost and scent options. Wicks are usually cotton, with a metal or paper sustainer, and some wicks are wooden for a crackling effect.

Uses and cultural context: Vaxljus are used for lighting, mood, holidays, ceremonies, and aromatherapy. In Sweden and other Nordic countries they are common in homes during winter and festive seasons, as well as in religious and commemorative events. Decorative vaxljus are also used in arrangements and centerpieces.

Safety and environmental notes: Always burn candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface; trim the wick to about 5–6 mm before lighting; keep away from flammable materials and avoid drafts. Never leave burning candles unattended. Paraffin-based candles release soot and hydrocarbons, while plant-based waxes may be more sustainable. Dispose of spent candles properly and recycle or reuse containers where possible.
