Vatväriaineet, often translated as vat dyes, are a class of insoluble dyes that require a chemical reduction process to become soluble and thus able to be applied to fibers. Once applied, they are re-oxidized, returning to their insoluble state and becoming permanently fixed within the fabric. This process makes vat dyes exceptionally colorfast, resistant to washing, light, and rubbing.

The characteristic "vat" in vat dyes refers to the vat, a container, where the reduction process takes place. Historically, this involved fermentation using reducing agents like indigo from the indigo plant. Modern industrial processes utilize chemical reducing agents such as sodium hydrosulfite in an alkaline solution. After the dye is absorbed by the fiber, it is exposed to air or an oxidizing agent to restore its original insoluble form.

Commonly used vat dyes include indigo, which gives denim its iconic blue color, and anthraquinone-based dyes, which offer a wide spectrum of vibrant shades like reds, yellows, and greens. Due to their excellent fastness properties, vat dyes are frequently employed for dyeing cellulosic fibers such as cotton and linen, particularly for applications demanding high durability, such as workwear, uniforms, and high-quality textiles. The dyeing process, while effective, is more complex and energy-intensive compared to some other dye classes.
