This reaction is endothermic, meaning it requires heat to proceed.

Vattengas has historically been an important industrial fuel and a source of hydrogen and carbon monoxide for various chemical syntheses. It was widely used for town gas or illuminating gas before the advent of natural gas. The carbon monoxide component makes vattengas toxic, as it is a poisonous gas. Due to its flammability and toxicity, careful handling and containment are essential. Modern industrial processes often utilize more refined methods for producing synthesis gas with specific ratios of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, depending on the intended application.
