Vatnsútgildi is an Icelandic term referring to the discharge or release of water from a source into a receiving body, such as a river, lake, or sea. It can denote natural outflow, such as baseflow from a watershed, as well as outflow from engineered systems, including municipal wastewater treatment plants, industrial facilities, drainage from mines, or cooling water from power plants. The concept is used in hydrology, environmental management, and regulatory contexts to describe both the rate of discharge and the composition of the water being released.

Discharge rate is often denoted as Q and is measured in cubic meters per second (m3/s) or liters per second. Discharge is influenced by weather, seasonal cycles, land use, and operations at facilities that handle water. The quality of the discharged water is analyzed for substances that may affect the receiving environment, including pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), suspended solids, organic matter (BOD/COD), salinity, conductivity, and any contaminants such as metals or pollutants.

Regulatory frameworks typically require permits for discharges, setting limits on concentrations and total loads, and prescribing monitoring and reporting requirements. Environmental impact assessments may be needed for new discharge points. Monitoring can involve grab samples, composite samples, and, in some cases, continuous outfall monitoring.

In addition to effluent discharges, the term also applies to controlled releases from reservoirs or other water-management structures, where inflow and outflow must be balanced to protect ecosystems, manage floods, and support hydropower operations.
