Vastuslämpötilailmaisin, often abbreviated as RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector), is a type of temperature sensor. It works by measuring the change in electrical resistance of a material as its temperature changes. RTDs are known for their accuracy, stability, and wide operating temperature range. Commonly used materials for RTD elements include platinum, nickel, and copper. Platinum is favored for its linearity and resistance to corrosion, making it the most prevalent choice for high-accuracy applications.

The principle of operation is based on the fact that the resistance of a conductor increases with temperature. This relationship is typically well-defined for specific materials. An RTD element is usually a coil or a thin film of the resistive material. When an electric current is passed through the RTD, its resistance is measured, and this resistance value is then converted into a temperature reading using a calibration curve or formula specific to the RTD element.

RTDs are employed in a variety of industries and applications, including industrial process control, scientific research, and laboratory equipment. They are valued in situations where precise temperature measurement is critical. Compared to thermocouples, RTDs generally offer higher accuracy and repeatability, although they may have slower response times and are typically more expensive. The common Pt100 RTD, which has a resistance of 100 ohms at 0 degrees Celsius, is a widely used standard.
