Varoitusväritys, also known as aposematism or warning coloration, is a type of coloration or pattern found in some animal species that serves as a warning signal to potential predators. This conspicuous coloration typically involves bright, contrasting colors such as red, yellow, orange, or white against a dark background, or distinctive patterns like stripes and spots. The purpose of varoitusväritys is to advertise the animal's unpalatability, toxicity, or dangerous nature, such as sharp spines or venom.

The effectiveness of varoitusväritys relies on a process of learned avoidance by predators. Predators that have had a negative experience with an aposematic prey item, such as tasting something bitter or venomous, will learn to associate the specific warning coloration with that unpleasant experience.
