The most common variety is the metal-oxide varistor (MOV), typically constructed as a ceramic disc with metalized surfaces. MOVs are connected in parallel across protected circuits so that transient surges are diverted away from sensitive components.

A varistor exhibits a highly non-linear current-voltage characteristic: at normal operating voltages the resistance is high and leakage is minimal, but as the voltage approaches a specified threshold, conductivity rises rapidly and the device clamps the voltage to a safer level. Key specifications include the varistor voltage (often denoted V1mA or VBR), the maximum continuous operating voltage (MCOV or VRMS rating), and the energy rating expressed in joules. Clamping voltage, the voltage reached at a given surge current, is also specified and tends to be higher than the nominal varistor voltage. MOVs are non-polarized and bidirectional in many configurations, which makes them suitable for AC line protection.

Applications commonly include power supplies, consumer electronics, and industrial equipment where transient overvoltages can occur.
