A variaattori, also known as a continuously variable transmission (CVT), is a type of automatic transmission that can change seamlessly through a continuous range of effective gear ratios. This differs from traditional gear transmissions that have a fixed number of gears. The most common type of variaattori uses a system of pulleys and a belt or chain. Two pulleys, one connected to the engine (drive pulley) and one connected to the wheels (driven pulley), are connected by a belt or chain. The diameter of these pulleys can be changed, which alters the gear ratio.

When the engine starts, the drive pulley is narrow and the driven pulley is wide, creating a low gear ratio for starting from a stop. As the engine speed increases, the drive pulley widens and the driven pulley narrows, effectively increasing the gear ratio and providing higher speeds. This continuous adjustment allows the engine to operate within its most efficient or powerful RPM range, regardless of the vehicle's speed. Variaattorit are commonly found in scooters, snowmobiles, ATVs, and some compact cars. Their main advantages include smooth acceleration, improved fuel efficiency, and simpler operation compared to manual transmissions. However, they can sometimes be perceived as having a less engaging driving feel and may not be as durable under heavy load as traditional gearboxes.
