A variaattori, also known as a continuously variable transmission (CVT), is a type of automatic transmission that can change seamlessly through a continuous range of effective gear ratios. This differs from traditional gear transmissions that have a fixed number of gears. The most common type of variaattori uses a system of pulleys and a belt or chain. Two pulleys, one connected to the engine (drive pulley) and one connected to the wheels (driven pulley), are connected by a belt or chain. The diameter of these pulleys can be changed, which alters the gear ratio.
When the engine starts, the drive pulley is narrow and the driven pulley is wide, creating a
