These extinguishers typically consist of a cylindrical metal tank filled with water under pressure. A handle or lever mechanism is used to release the water. Some vandslukkere may also contain additives, such as foaming agents, to enhance their effectiveness on Class A fires by increasing the wetting and cooling properties of the water. They are generally colored red, a standard color for fire fighting equipment in many regions.

Vandslukkere are a cost-effective and widely available option for fire suppression. However, they are not suitable for fires involving flammable liquids (Class B), combustible metals (Class D), or electrical equipment (Class C), as water can spread flammable liquids, react violently with certain metals, or conduct electricity, posing a significant safety hazard. Proper training on the correct use and limitations of a vandslukker is essential for effective and safe operation.
