Valószínségtér is a Hungarian term that translates to "probability space" in English. It is a fundamental concept in probability theory and forms the bedrock upon which probability calculations are built. A probability space is a mathematical construct that consists of three parts: a sample space, a set of events, and a probability measure.

The sample space, often denoted by the Greek letter Omega (Ω), is the set of all possible outcomes of a random experiment. For example, if the experiment is flipping a coin, the sample space would be {Heads, Tails}. If the experiment is rolling a standard six-sided die, the sample space would be {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}.

The set of events, denoted by the Greek letter Sigma (Σ), is a collection of subsets of the sample space. These subsets represent the specific outcomes or combinations of outcomes that we are interested in. For the coin flip example, possible events could include "getting Heads" ({Heads}) or "getting Tails" ({Tails}). For the die roll, an event could be "rolling an even number" ({2, 4, 6}). The collection of events must satisfy certain mathematical properties, forming what is known as a sigma-algebra.

Finally, the probability measure, denoted by P, assigns a probability value to each event in the set of events. This value, always between 0 and 1 inclusive, quantifies the likelihood of that event occurring. The probability measure must also adhere to specific axioms, such as the probability of the entire sample space being 1, and the probability of disjoint events being the sum of their individual probabilities. Together, these three components define the probability space, providing a rigorous framework for studying and calculating probabilities.
