Valosähkökirjoitus refers to a method of creating images or text on a surface using light-induced chemical reactions. This technique is a form of photolithography, a critical process in the fabrication of integrated circuits and microelectromechanical systems.

The core principle involves a light-sensitive material, often called a photoresist, which is applied to a substrate. When exposed to light of specific wavelengths, the chemical properties of the photoresist change. There are two main types: positive photoresist, where exposed areas become soluble in a developer solution, and negative photoresist, where exposed areas become insoluble.

After the light exposure, a developer solution is used to remove either the exposed (positive) or unexposed (negative) areas of the photoresist. This leaves a patterned layer of photoresist on the substrate, acting as a mask. Subsequent processes, such as etching or deposition, can then be performed on the exposed areas of the substrate, or the patterned photoresist itself can be transferred to the underlying material.
