Valonjakojärjestelmät, which translates to photonic crystals in English, are materials that have a periodic arrangement of structures which canя affect the behavior of light. These materials can be used to control and manipulate light, often exhibiting unique optical properties.

In a photonic crystal, the periodic structure of the material causes a band gap in the photonic dispersion relation, which is similar to the way electrons occupy energy bands in solids. This band gap results in a range of frequencies at which light cannot propagate through the material, effectively making it invisible to these frequencies.

There are two main types of photonic crystals: three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D). 3D photonic crystals, also known as inverse opals, have a periodic structure in all three dimensions, while 2D photonic crystals have a periodic structure only in two dimensions. The 2D type can be used to create photonic band gaps that are much larger than those of 3D photonic crystals.
