Valoisuuskomponentti, sometimes translated as luminance component, refers to the part of a color signal that represents its brightness or intensity. In color television and digital imaging systems, a color image is typically represented by separating the luminance information from the chrominance information. The luminance component, often denoted by Y, carries the grayscale information, essentially what a black-and-white television would display.

This separation is advantageous because the human eye is more sensitive to changes in brightness than to changes in color. Therefore, the luminance signal can be transmitted with higher resolution or fidelity than the chrominance signals, which represent the color information. The chrominance is usually split into two components, often referred to as U and V, or I and Q, which encode the color difference information.

By separating luminance and chrominance, systems can achieve efficient transmission and storage of color information. For example, in many video compression standards, the luminance signal is given more bandwidth than the chrominance signals, as perceived image quality is largely determined by the luminance. This technique allows for smaller file sizes and lower transmission rates without a significant loss in perceived visual quality.
