Valnøttreet, scientifically known as Juglans regia, is a deciduous tree belonging to the Juglandaceae family. It is native to a wide area extending from the Balkans eastward across Central Asia to the Himalayas. This species is widely cultivated for its edible nuts, known as walnuts, and for its valuable hardwood.

The tree is large and can reach heights of up to 30 meters (98 feet) with a trunk diameter of up to 2 meters (6.6 feet). Its leaves are pinnately compound, typically bearing 5 to 9 leaflets. The fruit is a drupe containing a wrinkled, hard-shelled seed that is the edible walnut. Valnøttreet is monoecious, meaning individual trees have both male and female flowers. The male flowers are borne in catkins, while the female flowers are solitary or in small clusters.

Walnut wood is a highly prized material in furniture making, cabinetry, and decorative veneers due to its attractive grain and durability. The nuts are a significant source of food, rich in proteins, healthy fats, and vitamins. The tree also produces a dark-colored dye from its husks. Valnøttreet prefers well-drained soil and full sun. It is susceptible to certain diseases and pests, which can affect nut production and tree health. The lifespan of a valnøttre can be considerable, with some individuals living for several centuries.
