Vakuumstøbning, also known as vacuum casting or urethane casting, is a low-volume manufacturing process used to create high-quality plastic parts. It is particularly well-suited for producing prototypes, pre-production runs, and short-term production of complex geometries. The process begins with creating a master pattern, often made using 3D printing or CNC machining. A silicone rubber mold is then made from this master pattern.

Once the silicone mold is cured, it is cut open, and the master pattern is removed. The mold is then placed in a vacuum chamber. Liquid polyurethane resin is poured into the mold under vacuum conditions. The vacuum removes air bubbles from the resin, ensuring a void-free casting and a high-quality surface finish. The resin is then cured, typically using heat. After curing, the mold is opened, and the finished part is removed. Multiple copies can be cast from a single silicone mold, with typical mold life ranging from 15 to 25 parts, depending on complexity and material.

Vakuumstøbning offers several advantages, including the ability to cast parts with intricate details, undercuts, and varying wall thicknesses. It can also replicate the look and feel of various production plastics, such as ABS, polycarbonate, and rubber-like materials. The process is faster and more cost-effective than traditional injection molding for small production runs. It allows for a wide range of finishes, including matte, gloss, and textured surfaces, and can incorporate different colors and inserts.
