Vaksiners, commonly known as vaccines, are biological preparations that improve immunity to specific infectious diseases. They typically contain an agent that resembles a disease-causing microorganism, such as weakened or killed forms of the microbe, its toxins, or one of its surface proteins. When administered, vaccines stimulate the body’s immune system to recognize the agent as harmful and produce antibodies or activated lymphocytes that can counteract the pathogen if encountered in the future.

The concept of vaccination dates back centuries, with early forms of immunization practiced in China and the Middle East. However, modern vaccines emerged in the 18th century following Edward Jenner’s development of the smallpox vaccine in 1796, which marked the beginning of scientific vaccination. Over time, advancements in microbiology, immunology, and biotechnology have led to the creation of vaccines for a wide range of diseases, including polio, measles, tetanus, and COVID-19.

Vaccines are administered through various routes, such as intramuscular, subcutaneous, or oral injections, depending on the type of vaccine and the target disease. Some vaccines require multiple doses to achieve full immunity, while others provide lifelong protection after a single dose. Common vaccine delivery methods include needles, nasal sprays, or oral capsules.

The effectiveness of vaccines varies by type, with some offering near-perfect protection (e.g., measles vaccine) and others providing partial immunity (e.g., influenza vaccine). While vaccines are generally safe, rare side effects such as mild fever, soreness at the injection site, or, in extremely rare cases, severe allergic reactions may occur. Stringent regulatory processes, including clinical trials and monitoring systems, ensure vaccine safety before and after approval.

Vaccination plays a crucial role in public health by reducing the spread of infectious diseases, protecting vulnerable populations, and preventing outbreaks. Global vaccination efforts, such as those led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, have significantly reduced the incidence of many preventable diseases, contributing to increased life expectancy worldwide. Vaccines remain one of the most cost-effective and ethical interventions in medicine.
