vadtjiem

Vadtjiem is a small municipality and cultural region in the fictional country of Veridia. It lies in the northeastern part of Veridia along the banks of the Vadt river, and comprises the historic town center and surrounding rural areas. The municipality covers about 72 square kilometers and had an estimated population of 8,600 in 2023. The terrain is a mix of riverine plains and gentle hills, with a temperate climate and fertile soils suitable for crops and dairy farming.

The name Vadtjiem derives from the local Veridian language, combining vadt (“river”) and jiem (“meadow”).

Vadtjiem developed as a market settlement in the 12th century, receiving town rights in 1283. It grew as a regional trade node due to its position on riverine routes and later expanded with small-scale milling and crafts during the 18th and 19th centuries. The 20th century brought modernization in agriculture and modest manufacturing; the town preserved many historic buildings.

Vadtjiem is governed by a mayor and a seven-member council elected for four-year terms. It forms part of Veridia's provincial district and cooperates with neighboring municipalities on regional services.

Key sectors include dairy farming, crop production (wheat and barley), and light manufacturing. Tourism is driven by historic architecture, riverside promenades, and cultural events.

Its town center features timber-framed houses and the early-modern Vadtjiem Cathedral. The annual Vadtjiem Days festival showcases local crafts and music. Rail access via the Veridia Regional Line connects to major cities; road connections link to the national highway network.
