Vaahtojärjestelmät, often translated as foam systems, are fire suppression systems that use foam concentrate and water to create a fire-fighting foam. This foam is designed to suppress fires by forming a blanket over the burning material, which cools the fuel and prevents oxygen from reaching the fire. Foam systems are particularly effective for flammable liquid fires, such as those involving gasoline, oil, or alcohol.

The core components of a typical foam system include a foam concentrate storage tank, a proportioner, a water supply, and a discharge device such as a foam nozzle or monitor. The proportioner is crucial as it accurately mixes the correct ratio of foam concentrate with water. This mixture is then delivered through a network of pipes to the discharge devices, which apply the foam to the fire area.

There are various types of foam concentrates, each suited for different classes of fire and fuel types. Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) is common for hydrocarbon fires, while Alcohol-Resistant Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AR-AFFF) is used for polar solvent fires. Other types include protein foams and fluoroprotein foams. The selection of the appropriate foam concentrate depends on the specific hazards present.

Foam systems can be designed as fixed installations, meaning they are permanently installed in areas requiring protection, or as mobile units that can be deployed as needed. They are widely used in industries such as oil and gas, aviation, chemical manufacturing, and in large warehouses.
