Võrgueristus, often translated as network isolation or network segmentation, is a security technique that divides a computer network into smaller, isolated subnets. This separation is achieved by implementing barriers between these segments, which can be physical or logical. The primary goal of võrgueristus is to enhance network security by limiting the spread of threats and unauthorized access.

When a network is segmented, traffic between different segments is controlled and monitored. This means that if one segment is compromised by malware or a security breach, the attacker's access is contained within that specific segment and cannot easily spread to other parts of the network. This containment strategy is crucial for protecting sensitive data and critical systems.

Võrgueristus can be implemented using various technologies, including firewalls, virtual local area networks (VLANs), and access control lists (ACLs). Firewalls act as gatekeepers, inspecting traffic and deciding whether to allow or deny it based on predefined security rules. VLANs allow administrators to group devices logically, regardless of their physical location, creating separate broadcast domains that can then be isolated. ACLs, typically configured on routers and switches, permit or deny network traffic based on specific criteria like source and destination IP addresses.

It can also improve network performance by reducing broadcast traffic within segments and simplifying network management by allowing for more granular control over resources and user access.
