Võlgnik is the Estonian term for a person or organization that owes money or other obligations to another party. The genitive form võlgnike is used when referring to debtors collectively or describing a relationship, such as “the debtors’ obligations.” A debtor may arise from loans, credit purchases, or services provided with deferred payment.

Debtors can be individuals or corporate entities. Debts may be secured, meaning they are backed by collateral such as a mortgage or lien, or unsecured, where no specific asset guarantees repayment. Debts span consumer loans, mortgages, business loans, supplier credits, and other forms of credit arrangements. The contractual terms typically specify the repayment schedule, applicable interest, fees, and remedies in case of default.

When a debtor falls behind on payments, the creditor may send reminders and, if necessary, pursue a court judgment. Following a judgment, enforcement measures can be used to recover the owed amount, including wage garnishment, bank account seizure, or the sale of collateral. In many jurisdictions there are statutes of limitations and processes for debt relief or restructuring to balance the interests of creditors and debtors.

Debtors have rights designed to protect them from unfair treatment. These include the right to receive clear information about the debt, to dispute or verify amounts, to request reasonable repayment arrangements, and to contest enforcement actions that are illegal or abusive. Debt collection practices are typically regulated to prevent harassment and deception.

Economically, debtors participate in credit markets that support consumption and investment. Excessive indebtedness can lead to insolvency or bankruptcy, while responsible borrowing and transparent settlement procedures help maintain financial stability.
