Võimsusregulatsioon refers to the process of controlling and adjusting the amount of power output from an electrical source, such as a generator or power plant. This is a critical aspect of maintaining stability and reliability within an electrical grid. The primary goal of võimsusregulatsioon is to ensure that the generated power precisely matches the demand from consumers at any given moment. Fluctuations in demand, caused by factors like industrial activity, changes in weather affecting heating or cooling needs, or the switching on and off of large appliances, require constant adjustments in power generation.

There are several methods for achieving võimsusregulatsioon. Primary regulation, also known as frequency control, responds almost instantaneously to changes in grid frequency. This is usually achieved by automatic adjustments in the prime mover speed of generators. Secondary regulation, or economic dispatch, takes place over a longer timescale and aims to allocate generation in the most cost-effective manner across different power plants while still maintaining grid frequency and power flow within acceptable limits. Tertiary regulation involves starting or stopping generating units and takes the longest to implement, often used for long-term adjustments to the overall power balance.
