In caves, dripping water rich in dissolved minerals can create stalactites and stalagmites. In hot springs, dissolved minerals can form sinter terraces. The rate of formation depends on factors like the mineral content of the water, the flow rate, and the ambient temperature.

While vízkövet itself is a natural geological process, the term is often used colloquially to refer to limescale buildup in plumbing and appliances. This buildup occurs when hard water, containing high concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions, flows through pipes or heats up. The dissolved minerals precipitate out, forming a hard, crusty layer that can reduce water flow and damage equipment. This domestic limescale is chemically the same as naturally formed vízkövet but is considered an undesirable nuisance in human-made systems.
