It describes how much water is present (water level) and how fast it is moving (discharge) as a function of meteorological conditions (precipitation, temperature, snowmelt) and human influences (dams, reservoirs, irrigation). The term is used in hydrology, water management, and civil engineering to characterize the hydrological regime, including seasonal patterns, extremes (floods and low water), and long-term trends.

Measurement and indicators in vízjárás are based on data from hydrometric networks. The water level, or vízállás, is read from gauging stations and typically given in meters above a reference level. Discharge, denoted Q, is measured in cubic meters per second and may be complemented by information about flow velocity and storage in reservoirs. These indicators are collected continuously and used for forecasts, planning, and regulatory purposes.
