Värisiirtymien, often translated as color shift or dichroism, refers to the phenomenon where a material appears to change color depending on the angle of observation or illumination. This optical effect is a result of interference, diffraction, or selective reflection of light.

One common cause of värisiirtymien is thin-film interference. When light reflects off the top and bottom surfaces of a thin transparent layer, such as an oil slick on water or a soap bubble, the light waves can interfere constructively or destructively. This interference pattern depends on the thickness of the film and the wavelength of light, causing different colors to be enhanced or canceled out at different viewing angles.

Another mechanism is diffraction. Holograms and some types of iridescent materials utilize this principle.
