Uziemieniem refers to the practice and result of connecting an electrical installation to the earth to establish a stable reference potential and a low-impedance path for fault currents. In English, this is commonly called grounding or earthing. The goal is to create a safe path for stray or fault currents and to stabilize voltage levels within the system.

The main purposes of uziemienie are safety and protection. By directing fault currents to the earth, protective devices such as fuses and circuit breakers operate reliably, reducing the risk of electric shock and equipment damage. It also helps control transient voltages and improves the effectiveness of lightning protection and surge mitigation.

There are several forms of uziemienie. Protective earth (uziemienie ochronne, PE) provides a safe reference for exposed conductive parts. Functional earth (uziemienie funkcjonalne, FE) serves non-safety roles, such as noise reduction or signal reference, and is not intended to carry fault currents. Equipotential bonding is often used to connect conductive parts to maintain the same electrical potential and reduce touch voltage.

Implementation typically involves earth electrodes (rods, plates, or a ground bed) driven into the soil, an earth conductor linking the electrode network to the main distribution board, and a main earthing terminal. The arrangement may require multiple electrodes to achieve a sufficiently low earth resistance, and soil conditions strongly influence performance. Standards such as PN-EN 60364 govern design, testing, and safety practices in many jurisdictions.

Maintenance and testing are essential. Regular inspections ensure continuity and corrosion protection, and periodic measurements of earth resistance verify that the system continues to meet required safety criteria.
