Uuringutulemine, also known as peritonsillar abscess or quinsy, is a bacterial infection characterized by an accumulation of pus near the tonsils, specifically in the peritonsillar space. It often develops as a complication of tonsillitis, particularly when the infection spreads beyond the tonsillar capsule. Uuringutulemine is most common among adolescents and young adults, but it can occur at any age.

The typical symptoms include severe sore throat, usually one-sided, difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), fever, muffled voice, and ear pain on the affected side. Patients may also exhibit swelling and redness of the oropharynx, trismus (difficulty opening the mouth), and drooling in more severe cases. Physical examination often reveals swelling in the peritonsillar area, deviation of the uvula away from the affected side, and enlarged cervical lymph nodes.

Diagnosis is primarily clinical, supported by physical examination findings. Imaging studies like ultrasonography or CT scan may be employed if the diagnosis is uncertain or to assess the extent of the infection.

Treatment typically involves drainage of the abscess, which can be performed via needle aspiration or surgical tonsillectomy in recurrent cases. Antibiotic therapy targeting common causative bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species, is also essential. In some cases, corticosteroids may be used to reduce swelling and pain. Prompt management is crucial to prevent complications such as airway obstruction, spread of infection, or sepsis.

Prevention focuses on managing initial sore throats effectively and seeking early medical attention for symptoms indicative of abscess formation.
