Urethaneurea is a term used in polymer chemistry to describe materials that contain both urethane (carbamate) and urea linkages within the same molecule or polymer network. It does not denote a single well-defined compound, but rather a class of compounds and materials including urethane–urea hybrids, block or random copolymers, and crosslinked networks in which urethane and urea groups are present in varying ratios.

Synthesis and structure: These materials are typically produced by reacting diisocyanates with a mixture of alcohols or polyols and amines or diamines. The alcohols form urethane linkages, while the amines form urea linkages upon reaction with isocyanate groups. Depending on functionality and processing, the resulting architectures can be linear, segmented, or crosslinked, and may be thermoplastic or thermosetting.

Properties and applications: Urethane–urea materials combine the elasticity and toughness associated with polyurethanes with the enhanced chemical resistance and hardness seen in polyureas. They often exhibit good abrasion resistance, adhesion, and weathering performance. Applications include coatings, adhesives, sealants, elastomeric materials, and specialty foams or composites.
