Urankällor refers to the various natural and artificial sources from which uranium can be extracted. Naturally occurring uranium is found in rocks, soil, and water. Its concentration in these sources varies significantly, with some deposits being economically viable for mining while others are not. The primary natural source is uranium ore, typically found in sandstone, conglomerates, and igneous rocks. Historically, uranium was also extracted as a byproduct of other mining operations, such as gold or copper extraction, but dedicated uranium mining has become more prevalent.

The extraction process for uranium ore usually involves open-pit or underground mining techniques, similar to those used for other metals. Once the ore is extracted, it undergoes a milling process to concentrate the uranium into a product called yellowcake, which is primarily ammonium diuranate or uranium oxide. This yellowcake is then further processed, often involving conversion into uranium hexafluoride for enrichment.

Beyond traditional ore mining, other less common or developing urankällor include the extraction of uranium from seawater. While the concentration of uranium in seawater is very low, the vast volume of the oceans makes it a theoretically enormous reserve. Research into efficient and cost-effective methods for extracting uranium from seawater is ongoing. Additionally, reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel from nuclear reactors can recover remaining fissile materials, including uranium, although this is a complex and specialized process. The identification and assessment of urankällor are crucial for nuclear fuel supply chains and energy security.
