Upscaling techniques, often referred to as upsampling or super-resolution, are methods used to increase the resolution of a digital image or video. This process involves adding new pixels to an existing image to make it appear larger or sharper. The goal is to create a higher-resolution version that retains as much detail and quality as possible, often surpassing what would be achieved by simple geometric enlargement.

Various techniques exist, broadly categorized into traditional interpolation methods and more advanced AI-based approaches. Traditional methods like nearest-neighbor interpolation, bilinear interpolation, and bicubic interpolation work by calculating the color values of new pixels based on the surrounding existing pixels. Nearest-neighbor is the fastest but can produce blocky results. Bilinear interpolates between four surrounding pixels, offering a smoother transition. Bicubic interpolation considers a larger area of surrounding pixels, generally yielding better quality but at a higher computational cost.

More recently, deep learning and artificial intelligence have revolutionized upscaling. These AI-driven methods, often called AI super-resolution, train neural networks on vast datasets of low-resolution and high-resolution image pairs. This allows the AI to learn complex patterns and textures, enabling it to intelligently generate plausible details that were not present in the original low-resolution image. AI upscaling can often produce significantly sharper and more detailed results than traditional interpolation, particularly for complex textures and edges. These techniques are widely used in image editing software, video processing, and gaming to enhance visual quality.
