The Upper Room is a historic site in Jerusalem that holds significant religious importance in Christianity. According to the New Testament, it is the location where Jesus Christ met His twelve apostles for the Last Supper, as described in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The event is often referred to as the Last Supper, during which Jesus instituted the sacrament of Holy Communion.

The building believed to be the actual Upper Room is a small, vaulted structure situated on a platform above the Mount of Olives. Archaeological investigations have suggested that the structure dates to the 1st or 2nd century, with renovations made in the 4th or 5th century. The most visible portion of the building is the upper level, hence the name, which contains a small room with a stone altar, a small altar table, and a ceremonial basin. The site also hosts a 5th-century crypt below the roof that is sometimes considered a burial site.

The Upper Room has been a focal point for Christian pilgrimage for centuries. Various Christian denominations, particularly Catholic, Orthodox, and Anglican communities, celebrate the day of the Last Supper (sixth of December) at the site. The location also played a role in early Christian worship services, and in 1852, inspired the Upper Room ministry of prayer and service aimed at building a closer theological understanding among Christian faith communities.

Today, the site is a museum and pilgrimage site managed by the Municipality of Jerusalem. Visitors meet an interpretation center that explains the history and biblical significance of the Upper Room. The site’s location, architecture and small voids offered concrete evidence about the cultural and religious life of early Jerusalem clientele.
