An ultrasonist is a professional who uses ultrasound equipment to produce diagnostic images or to deliver therapeutic ultrasound procedures. In everyday clinical use, the term is often synonymous with ultrasonographer or sonographer, though some jurisdictions distinguish between imaging specialists and researchers who study ultrasonic waves or develop new ultrasound techniques.

Medical imaging uses of ultrasound include obstetric and fetal imaging, abdominal, pelvic, vascular, and cardiac studies, musculoskeletal imaging, and guidance of interventional procedures. In addition, therapeutic applications such as physical therapy using sound waves and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for tissue ablation are part of the field.

Work involves operating ultrasound systems, selecting transducers and settings, acquiring and optimizing images, performing measurements, applying Doppler to assess blood flow, documenting findings, and assisting physicians with interpretation. Safety, patient comfort, and adherence to ALARA principles are integral parts of daily practice.

Training and regulation vary by country. Most ultrasonists complete a formal education program in diagnostic medical sonography, earning a certificate or degree, and obtain certification from professional bodies such as ARDMS or equivalent. Licensure or scope of practice may also be required in some jurisdictions.

History: Medical ultrasonography emerged in the mid-20th century and expanded rapidly in the following decades, leading to the specialized imaging professions seen in modern radiology and clinical departments. The field continues to evolve with advances in transducer technology, Doppler methods, and three-dimensional imaging.
