Ultrasonicsystem refers to a device or collection of devices that generate, transmit, and utilize high-frequency sound waves—ultrasound—that typically lie above 20 kHz. Ultrasonic systems are used across industrial, medical, and scientific fields for tasks such as cleaning, welding, machining, imaging, and sensing.

Core components usually include a piezoelectric transducer, a signal generator and amplifier, and a mechanical interface such as a horn or sonotrode. The transducer converts electrical energy into mechanical vibrations at ultrasonic frequencies, and the mechanical interface transfers these vibrations to the workpiece or medium. Many systems rely on a liquid coupling medium to enable effective wave transmission, although solids and gases can also be involved.

In cleaning, ultrasonic cavitation and acoustic streaming remove soils from surfaces, liquids, and porous materials. Ultrasonic welding uses high-frequency vibration at the interface to generate heat and form a bond without filler material. Ultrasonic machining, drilling, and slicing employ abrasive particles driven by ultrasonic motion for precision material removal. In nondestructive testing and medical imaging, ultrasound penetrates materials or body tissue to reveal internal features via echoes.

Advantages include fast processing, strong cleaning action, and non-contact bonding. Limitations involve possible cavitation damage to delicate parts, heat buildup, and the need for proper coupling, frequency selection, and duty cycle. Safety concerns cover high voltage, moving parts, and exposure to ultrasound in some settings. The technology dates to the mid-20th century with advances in piezoelectric crystals and transducer design and has since become widely used across multiple industries.
