An ultralydsmåler, or ultrasonic meter, is a device that uses sound waves to measure various physical quantities. Its primary function is to determine distance, flow rate, or liquid level by emitting ultrasonic pulses and analyzing the time it takes for the echoes to return. These meters are non-contact instruments, meaning they do not need to physically touch the material being measured. This is particularly advantageous in situations where direct contact could be problematic, such as with corrosive liquids, viscous fluids, or delicate materials.

The principle of operation involves a transducer that emits a high-frequency sound wave. This wave travels through the medium and reflects off an object or the surface of a liquid. The transducer then detects the returning echo. By precisely measuring the time interval between the emission of the pulse and the reception of the echo, and knowing the speed of sound in the medium, the distance to the object or surface can be calculated. For flow measurement, multiple transducers or a single transducer in a specific configuration can be used to detect the Doppler shift in the returning sound waves caused by moving particles or fluid. This shift is directly proportional to the velocity of the fluid.

Ultralydsmålere find widespread application across numerous industries. They are commonly used in industrial process control for monitoring tank levels, managing wastewater treatment, and measuring the flow of liquids and gases in pipelines. In medicine, ultrasound technology is fundamental for imaging and diagnostic purposes, though medical ultrasound devices are more specialized.
